- Geographic Routing in Hyperbolic Space
Monday, March 10 at 4:30pm in the 5th floor lounge, Malott Hall. Refreshments will be served at 4pm.
Abstract Theoretical computer science applies mathematical ideas to address questions about the capabilities and limitations of computational devices and processes. This often results in unexpected connections between abstract objects and concrete engineering questions. The purpose of this talk is to illustrate one such example. The concrete question is: "How should a network autonomously organize itself so that its nodes can send messages to each other, when each node has only a local view of the network?" The answer hinges on analyzing the symmetries of the hyperbolic plane. No prior knowledge of networking or hyperbolic geometry will be assumed; indeed, much of this talk will be a brief tour through the history and properties of hyperbolic space.
