About the ACSU

Introduction

ACSU membership is open to all students. Those interested in computer science or computers in general are strongly encouraged to join. Our primary purpose is to enhance the undergraduate experience in computer science. We do this by promoting professional, social, and educational interaction among students interested in computers or computer science, as well as facilitating students' communication with CS faculty, alumni, and corporate representatives. We also publish a resume book that gets distributed to over 100 companies. The ACSU receives support from the Computer Science Department as well as several corporate sponsors.

Interaction with Peers and Upperclassmen

The ACSU sponsors various social events such as luncheons and bowling nights. These events are great opportunities to meet and interact with classmates and peers outside of the classroom environment.

Meeting Faculty Members

One of the ACSU's primary missions is to promote interaction between students and the Computer Science faculty. In addition to our social events, several general meetings are held each year to help improve student-faculty relations. These include presentations by faculty members, information sessions on graduate programs, and more. As a non sequitur, a member once convinced a professor into letting him join the professor's research group while the two nonchalantly ate pizza during an ACSU meeting.

Helping You Find a Job

The ACSU also brings the corporate perspective to our members and in the process bolsters our members' job searches.

  • ACSU Resume Book: Two resume books are published each year; one for members seeking summer employment and the other for those seeking full time employment. These books are sent out to over 100 top corporations such as Google, IBM, Microsoft, Intel, HP, Xerox, Oracle, and Apple. Furthermore, many of our resume books are sent out specifically to Cornell alumni (many of whom are former ACSU members) at these companies. Numerous students have received great job opportunities as a result.
  • Corporate Info Sessions and Guest Speakers: The ACSU also arranges several company info sessions and guest speaking arrangements. These provide an excellent opportunity for members to drop off resumes and talk with recruiters. Some companies we've hosted include Google, Microstrategy, Bloomberg, and Siemens Medical Systems.

The ACSU Meal Plan

The ACSU holds many free social events to increase camaraderie among members, and to encourage interaction between members and the Computer Science faculty. These include bowling nights and "Recovery Crew" snack tables after CS prelims. In addition, members are treated to a professionally catered luncheon with the faculty during each semester. These luncheons are great opportunities for students to talk with their professors outside of the classroom. Finally, pizza and soda are provided for members at every corporate info session and general meeting!

Other Exciting Events

  • Programming contests with exciting prizes!
  • A Farewell Dinner Cruise on Cayuga Lake at the end of the year.
